Christchurch Multicultural Council Inc.

Was established in April 1989 as an incorporated, non-government body, which acts as an umbrella organisation for the ethnic communities of greater Christchurch.

To promote, support and share information among the ethnic communities.

CMC is run by keen volunteers from several ethnic and NGO groups working for the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities. We accept and promote a Treaty-based multiculturalism policy.

Mission

To represent and support ethnic, migrant and refugee communities through leadership, partnership, capacity building and service delivery.

Key Functions

  • To promote harmonious intercultural relations.
  • To celebrate cultural diversity.
  • To provide advocacy and facilitation role for the effective settlement and integration of migrants, their health and well-being.   To work for wellbeing of ethnic communities – that their interests and aspirations are heard and respected.
  • To seek wider recognition of NZ as a multicultural society.
  • To cooperate with central and local government, government agencies and voluntary organisations in the promotion of its objectives.
  • To encourage ethnic groups in effective participation in decisions which affect them in sharing of community resources
